High Court to hear petitions filed against Punjab Government's Excise Policy today

CHANDIGARH: Several petitions challenging Punjab Government's Excise Policy 2022-23 have been registered in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The division bench of Justice Mahavir Sindhu and Justice Vikas Suri will hear all these petitions on Tuesday (June 28). So far, four petitions have been filed against this policy in the High Court, each of which has claimed that the policy is a violation of the Punjab Excise Act, 1914 and Punjab Liquor License Act, 1956 and monopoly is being promoted under this policy in the favour of certain handful entities.

According to the media reports, the petitions have been filed for quashing the Punjab Excise Policy on the grounds of being unjust and arbitrary. 

A Petition has also been filed by a Non-governmental organization (NGO) 'Arrive Safe', in which the High Court has been urged that before approving liquor store near the National Highway, the permission for the road which heads to the liquor store should also be taken from the government.
